CHAPTER 24

Katherine

“All I’m saying is, don’t jump to conclusions.” I had been trying to calm Julian down after he found out who we were going to question.

He wanted to go pay Lorenzo a visit last night, but I had stopped him since we didn’t have enough evidence. And the little bit we had managed was now lost in the evidence locker. Shit, even with no evidence, I couldn’t stop him. But I understood. It was his little sister. Colton and Julian were her only family.

“I’m not letting Char date someone who is bad news no matter how much she likes him.” He pressed down on the gas, speeding down the highway. “I’ll protect her from herself before I let anything happen to her!”

And so would I, and the evidence we had found potentially led back to Lorenzo, but gone, did no good. And what we did have wasn’t enough. I always knew his family was powerful especially after that night in high school, one I would never bring up.

Especially not to her brothers.

We pulled up to the building downtown and I practically ran after Julian.

“Look I get it, okay? Just let me do the talking. The way you look right now, it’s like you already found him guilty.”

“What if he is?” he snapped. “Fuck, I should have seen something the day I met him.”

And what could I say to that?

Lorenzo and Dante pulled out guns in order to save us back in high school, and at the time I didn’t think anything of it. But now?

Now I wasn’t a naive seventeen-year-old. I was a detective who knew having a gun at that age was not normal unless… nope I didn’t want to think about it.

“Holy crap!” We stepped off the elevators to the Rizzi Energy floor, and I was shocked. “Are they hiring?” This was a dream office, with the open space concept with glass wall meeting rooms and offices. Couches and tables took up the space around and a patio with a green wall was off to the side with a view of downtown. It even had a full coffee bar… like Starbucks! “Where do I apply?”

Julian just glared my way.

“Hi, can I help you with anything?” The receptionist behind the desk stood.

“We’re here to speak with Mr. Rizzi.” Julian pulled his badge out.

“Okay, one second.” One phone call later, and we were walking into his back office. It was the only one of two offices that had wooden walls from floor to ceiling and polished oak doors. Lorenzo sat behind a giant mahogany desk with a wall of windows behind him.

“Detectives.” He stood and shook our hands. “Please have a seat.”

“I think after last time you can call me Julian,” said my partner. “And I hear you went to high school with Katy. First name basis?”

I knew what he was doing: act like their friend and they talk.

“Alright, well then call me Lorenzo.” We sat and I could feel the tension radiating off Julian.

I cleared my throat. “Lorenzo, this is merely a formality.
